Lexis.com RETIREMENT

In mid-December, the old Lexis.com American platform is being retired and replaced with a new version.
Lexis Global has been in circulation in American for a few years now, so is well established.

However, as per the old version, all the non-USA content is tucked away - this time, behind the "International" Tab. Once you're there, drill down to your required jurisdiction or content type, and you'll be away laughing.

New: Lexis Advance

Exciting news, we now have access to the new LexisNexis platform, called Lexis Advance.
One exciting feature is that when you log into it (using your Otago username and password), you will be able to create and share folders and alerts, and customise many features.

The old (legacy) platform will be phased out at the end of the year.

From Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th the database trainers will be running refreshers database sessions.

In the week beginning 25 July, expert trainers from the three NZ legal database providers will be here. They will run three workshops each, focusing on tips and techniques to get the best out of their products.
If you need a refresher training session, this could be the thing for you.

LexisNexisNZ - Tuesday 26 July @ 11am; 12 noon or 2pm
CCH Intelliconnect - Wednesday 27 July @ 3pm; Thursday 28 July @ 11am or 12 noon
WestlawNZ - Friday 29 July @ 9am, 10am or 11am.

Online Help for online tools

The legal database vendors CCH (Intelliconnect), Thomson Reuters (WestlawNZ) and LexisNexisNZ are making instructional videos. Lots of videos. You can quickly link to them via our Law Subject Guide Strategies tab. They're short, and specific. They usually show you the fastest way to find things, but certainly not all the ways to find things. The suites of videos are being constantly updated too.

LexisNexisNZ Knowledge Network launched

The Lexis Nexis NZ Knowledge Network is the go-to place for all their training and support. Look under the "legal tab".
You can sign up for webinars, read their handouts, or watch videos.
There's a LOT of stuff here.... .
If you need a refresher lesson on specific processes, eg, how to find a statute, you may find the suite of little short videos very useful indeed.

Congratulations!

To everyone who attended the Student Professional Development event last Monday, congratulations! You took part in very sucessful event (if I may say so myself!).I was very impressed with the number of attendees.
We hope you got something positive out of it.
In a couple of weeks I'll send out a survey, so you can tell us what you really thought, and can be instrumental in shaping another event, should the signs point to go!

Law Student Professional Development Seminar

We can confirm that this event is on 18th March.
 The morning session comprises of several short talks by experts in the legal community, including database trainers, a recent graduate,  a senior partner from a local firm, and law librarians.
After a catered light lunch, you can choose which database sessions you wish to attend - the more the merrier!

LexisNexis NZ's TLC

LexisNexis NZ has just unveiled a new site full of useful teaching and learning resources for the LexisNexis NZ site. It's called TLC (for Training, Learning, Consultancy) and it includes a series of iKnowledge Bursts (90-second how-to videos) and a series of more in-depth iKnowledge tutorials. Topics include legislation, commentary, downloading, forms and precedents. The how-to stuff on customisation doesn't apply to us as we do not have individual log-ons to Lexis.
Access to the training videos is free; the consultancy option is not free.
Definitely worth a look, but you will need to create an account and put up with a bit of administrivia. Apparently the resources will eventually be available from within LexisNexis NZ itself, which is where we'd like them to be.

LexisNexis training

Trish, the LexisNexis trainer, is running free training sessions Thurs 12 May and Fri 13 May. Time: 12 noon and again at 1pm, each day.
Place: Law Library seminar room, on the 6th floor (enter the library via the 8th floor and use the internal stairs).
This is a great opportunity to see an expert put the databases through their paces.

Trish Andre will be here next Wednesday, offering free 50-minute training sessions on LexisNexis NZ and lexis.com.
It's a good chance to see what the Lexis databases can do for you, and what a Lexis expert can do with the databases.
Available times: 11am and 12 noon.
Place: Law Library seminar room (6th floor).

LexisNexis NZ database trials

We currently have trial access to two Australian databases.
CaseBase is a hybrid LINX/BriefCase product. Chiefly case law; plus a citation signal service (like CiteCase but with different symbols to indicate positive, negative, cautionary or neutral treatment by the court); plus articles. Great for Laws 498 students wanting to find Australian cases which cite Donselaar v Donselaar. Probably good for other things too. You'll find CaseBase via the Cases tab.
Halsbury's laws of Australia is like Halsbury's laws of England and our very own (Halsburyless) Laws of New Zealand. Find it via the Commentary tab, under International Commentary. Or if you're in LONZ, the cross-references to Halsbury's laws of Australia will take you where you want to go.
Worth a look, via the LexisNexis NZ homepage. Trial runs to the end of next week.

Here's a quick guide to printing bits of the LexisNexis NZ version of Laws of New Zealand (or Halsbury's laws of England) - easy when you know how, frustrating when you don't!

All New Zealand Law Reports now online

Where "all" means starting from volume 1, apparently published in 1883.
And "online" means subscription-only, in a LexisNexis kind of way.
If you have a university username and password, you'll find all the NZLRs on the LexisNexis NZ site, via the Law Subject Guide, where you can browse (like a table of contents for each volume) or search (indexed fields and/or full-text searching).

Lexis-Nexis outage Sunday 14 March

The Lexis-nexis.co.nz platform, which includes our subscriptions to the New Zealand Law Reports, Linxplus and Laws of New Zealand amongst other things, and the Lexis.com site will be unavailable in the evening of Sunday 14 March 2010 from 5pm to 12 midnight for system maintenance to accommodate the US switching into Daylight Savings Mode.
Lexis-Nexis and the Law Library apologises for any inconvenience this may create.
